Early and Modern Mode of Transport.

LI: To correctly draw and label a diagram.

Today we were looking at the change of early and the modern mode of transport. We labeled the different parts of one of the land, sea, rail, and air. We also chose to do one of which were the interior, outside, or the engine. Give each example for the differences between the two.

I found this task ineresting because it’s how the helicopter designs changed throughout the years.

An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was the only reason they created this was to fly in the air at the slowest speed they could.

Matach Girls Strike of 1888

LI: To identify the significance of the Match Girls Strike of 1888.

Today we had a session with David, our PB4L leader. He was teaching us about the match girls strike of 1888. This Strike of 1888 explains the hardships that the match girls went through, this eventually led to a protest trying to raise awareness for women who don’t get appreciate their hard work by not getting paid.

I found this task very interesting because I never knew the things women had to do to prove their rights.

An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was the phossy jaw. I found it sad for the people who had it and interesting of how it works.

Informal and Formal Language

L.I: To identify the style of a piece of text – informal/formal

This week LS2 looked into the differnet aspects of formal and informal language. Formal language uses full sentences. Formal language also uses a passive voice and imperatives. It also uses correct grammar and vocabulary but it does not include any usage of abbreviations, phrasal verbs, idioms, contractions and exclamation marks.

As for informal languages it has shorten down sentences which includes abbreviations like ASAP (As soon as possible) and BRB (Be right back). It’s basically the opposite of formal language. It uses contractions, phrasal verbs, idioms, contractions. It also uses imperatives but the sentence starts of with a verb. For example “Cook this meat for me”.

The activites we did were changing some informal sentences into formal sentences. We also did another challenge where we look into two different written letters and try to find evidence of informal or formal language usage. Me and my partner Aiden later showed what informal and formal language is on a poster.

I found this activity very new to me because I never knew there were names for the way we speak in different kinds of situations. It was fun and difficult finding ways to make informal sentences sound formal.

Provocation | Should we keep or ban fireworks?

LI: To identify the 2 perspectives of provocation

For writing, we have been learning about provocation. Provocation is giving opinions that will set off powerful feelings about the topic.

Before starting our learning conversation, we had 10 minutes to smart search for evidence we can use to support our think of the use of fireworks.

While taking notes, we shared and borrowed information from other groups to help build up our knowledge that we could use when explaining our opinions.

Afterwards we had a learning conversation about the pros and cons about fireworks. During our learning conversation, we agreed and disagreed with each other by using evidence that we gathered to support our statements.

In conclusion, we came up with two different opinions and gave reasons on why we thought that way.

We found this activity helpful because it gave us a good experience of provocation and a proper learning conversation.

Paper Airplane and Measurement

LI: To design and make a paper plane that will fly the furthest.

Our team challenge was to research about streamlined paper airplanes and create them to see how far it can go. We analysed our data of the paper air planes we flew. The planes we designed were a tip point plane, deltry and a jet. Our group designed multiple planes to verify which of the planes flew the best. The plane that went the furthest was Deziah’s Tip point plane. Lastly we versed group by group and measured the flight distance accurately.

I found this taskd difficult because this was my first time in a long time creating paper planes. With all the unique folds a specific stream line plan needs it was very confusing figuring it out. Overall I really enjoyed creating the plan and creating data for it. I especially enjoyed when I got to throw the paper airplane in the competition.

Something we could improve on with our plane is making our plan more slimmer so it can catch air and possibly go faster or maybe make the beak of the paper plane more sharper.

Manaiakalani Film Festival 2022

L.I: To showcase learning and creativity through films

November 8th 2022 marks the day of the Manaiakalani Film Festival. The Manaiakalni Film Festival is an event where schools of the Manaiakalani cluster including Panmure Bridge attend at Hoyts Cinema in Sylvia park to watch films created by the schools.

My favourite film is Panmure Bridge class LS1 film. Pokeblade. Pokeblade is basically the two shows Pokemon and Beyblade combied together and a kid gets bullied so he tries to fight back. But he was too weak so he trains his Pokemon which is a part of the Pokemon show. After all that the main protaginist gets bullied again, this time when he battles the bullies he the Pokemon has become more stronger and has even evoled. He then defeats both bullies Pokemon using Beyblade combat technique. My favourite film outside of Panmure Bridge is the “In Your Head” film created by Ruapotaka School.

The event was a whole lot of fun and I was impressed with what each school came up with for their films. I also enjoyed some of the funny moments put in there. It made me laughed. I enjoyed all of the schools films.

Transportation

L.I: To identify the 4 different modes of transport and their changes over time

The 4 different modes of transport are air, land, sea and rail. We explored more about the types of transportation and how they have evolved over time to build an understanding of how humanity makes changes to vehicles like cars, boats, trains and planes.

An example of air, land, sea and rail based vehicles are jets, hot air balloons, vans, motorbikes, trams and many much more.

I found this task interesting because I found out how much I know about specific kind of vehicles.  An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was submarines were used during the American civil war.

3 Motivational Quotes

LI: To create 3 motivational posters using quotes from inspirational people.

For an Excellence CARE award, Oscar and I collaborated to create 3 inspirational posters containing inspirational quotes.

Our first quote was from John Wooden, He once said “Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.” We think that the meaning behind this quote is That you can always rely on your mind.

Our second quote was from Master Oogway from Kung fu Panda. He once said “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why it is called the present” We think this means to treasure what you currently have.

Our third quote was from Samuel Langhorne Clemens. “The two most important days in your life are the day you’re born and the day you find out why”. We think that the hidden meaning behind this quote is you could always look back on your why.

We found this activity very interesting because of how much quotes we found that could inspire others. We especially enjoyed creating the posters to spread the word.

Macaroni and Cheese | Cooking Tech

L.I: To learn how to cook food

The Year 8’s of Ls2 went to Cooking tech. The Year 8’s cooked Macaroni. Our cooking teacher Mrs Heka firstly told us to gather the equipment we needed. We needed two measuring cups, a small measuring bowl, measuring spoons, a big pot and small pot, and a small bowl of salt.

We then grabbed the ingredients we needed but first we filled the big pot up to the half way point with water. Then we added the macaroni into the pot. Then we stirred until soften up. We then added one table spoon of flour into a measuring cup and 1 cup of milk into the other. We added the milk and butter.

Then we stirred til its thicken. When thicken we have to add some of the macaroni water to make it runny. We then slowly add the salt and flour to make it more delicous.

We then poured the water from the macaroni and dumped the macaroni with the white sauce we made. We mixed and added bread crum. We put it altogether in a tray and baked it in the oven.

My version of the macaroni and cheese turned out nice. I like how soft the macaroni was and the taste of the white sauce.

International Literacy Day

LI: To explain to others the impact of literacy.

Today is international literacy day. Carson, Oscar and I created a poster explaining the important impacts that Literacy can have on our learning.

Some of the points that we discussed were how many minutes of reading a day could equal a large expansion in vocabulary. Reading 20 minutes a day rounds out to 3,600 minutes a school year and 1.8 million words read. The kind of impact that could have on our academics is far and wide.

We found this activity enjoyable. We noticed a lot of great aspects around the importance of literacy and why we need to indulge in reading daily. We also enjoyed creating the poster and writing the main values of international literacy day.
